Documentation equipment is used to document the site, location of anomalies, interviews and attempt to document the characteristics of anomalies. The majority of documentation equipment is not used to document phenomena but to document the site and the investigation.
Video Equipment
Video recording equipment serves two purposes in the research process. Recording the environment during an investigation to establish credibility and authenticity of any evidence. It is utilized in two formats documentary--handheld units, and surveilance--stationary equipment.
Photography
Since the Spiritualism Movement in the early 20th century photography has been invaluable for documenting an environment or the reported phenomena. Typically photography comes in digital and film formats.
Audio
Audio recording equipment has proven to be the most widely known and accepted research tools. Primarily used to document interviews or record survey results. Secondary uses focus on documenting the characteristics of anomalies resulting in EVP.
